Sandoval Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes of Peru, is located in a protected area in the Tambopata National Reserve. The lake is home to a family of giant otters who are at high risk of extinction. You have a very high probability of observing these giant otters during your stay. The shores of the lake are populated with Mauritia palm forests that are home to six different species of monkeys and also find a huge variety of colorful birds.
On this visit to the Tambopata National Reserve you can enjoy almost four full days of Sandoval Lake and around, you really will be amazed of wild wealth in the reserve and be able to experience the Amazon rainforest. Our program includes walks through the forest tracts of day and / or night, boat excursions around the borders of this extraordinary beautiful and rich lake.

Upon arrival at the airport in Puerto Maldonado will be greeted by our staff who will welcome you. We will move from the upper Amazon basin to the Tambopata River boat dock. Then we will board a motorized canoe and depart to a nearby junction of the great Madre de Dios River. In about 25 minutes ashore on the trail that will lead us to Sandoval Lake.
Walk and visit the Lake. Take a walk on trail 3 Km/2miles where we will stop to see beautiful birds and butterflies, continuing until you reach a narrow canal boat. Sail through the palm forest that leads to the open waters of this calm lake. The crew row (on the reserve engines are banned) across to the hostel. At the lake we can see a huge paiche. The paiche is an Amazon fish that can weigh up 100kg/220lbs, we can also hear strange and alarming cries and watch the beautiful Giant Otters of the Amazon or Pteronura brasiliensis that looks on the surface. We stop for a short break and thus avoid the intense heat of the afternoon, then continue sailing catamaran to explore the entire end of the lake. Navigate to the sound of hundreds of macaws who return to the palm forest for the night. This visit allows us to a fully extensive connections with many species of birds and mammals which you will enjoy. Dinner at the lodge. Search for Alligators and Giant Otters. After dinner we will go in search of black caimans. These alligators measuring up to 4m long and dispute his share of fishing with Giant Otters.
Currently these alligators have disappeared from Amazon, but still can be seen in this protected lake. On clear nights we will enter into the lake to appreciate the vast unobstructed southern sky, with its unknown constellations and stunning views of the Milky Way.
Accommodation at the lodge.

Before dawn we will be in the lake to enjoy a spectacular sunrise. Then we will have a meeting with the Giant Otters, touring the lake and are very active at this time of day. Also we can see the majority of birds that live in the lake, especially those who stalk and capture prey that is the kind of fishing birds. Also enjoy the great slow and primitive Shansho. Experience the Jungle after breakfast, will leave on a walk along a trail which leads to the energetic tropical jungle surrounding the lake. Observe large chestnut trees in Brazil, also meet a local family, which teach us how life is in the jungle. They show us how to harvest and process the nuts to market this product. After lunch we will take a break and set off to explore the west side of the lake where we can see one or more species of monkeys like the Capuchins.
Presentation on the Sandoval Lake. Before dinner there will be a slide show, or we may watch a video about the beauty of the Peruvian Jungle. Night Walk. After dinner, we will have the opportunity to hike, because in these times can admire alligators in the lake and sometimes look for the strangest creatures like frogs, owls, chotacabras, frogs, monkeys and spiders, which make of the jungle a very charming place at night.

Wild Jungle and Botanical Garden. 
After breakfast, resting and enjoying a panoramic view from a high point on the shore of Lake Sandoval, we will go on a walk to explore this route that includes wildlife and a small botanical garden dedicated to the cultivation of medicinal plants species or , where we will investigate and learn the use of dozens of these. We will know the Pamicho that gives us the material used for our palm roofed shelters, Ginger Palmatorio used as an anti-inflammatory medicine, or the Chinchona or tree, quinine very important in history because its bark has saved lives of thousands from the agony of malaria and many numerous vital plants.
North Shore of Lake. After having lunch we will take a break, and then board a boat that will take us to the starting point for a hike where we introduce you to one of the secluded and quiet zone of the jungle, on the north shore of the lake, to return, perhaps, amid the pink glow of another glorious sunset.
Cayman Search or Night Walk. At night we can have one last chance to find the black alligator along the lake shore, or go for a last short walk in the nocturnal woods. Accommodation at the lodge.

After breakfast, we paddle among palm swamps found at the western end of the lake, for the last time. Here we can see the resident family of giant otters from this mugar on clear mornings we will see a magnificent sunrise and a wonderful reflection in the waters of the lake. Continuously navigate to the Madre de Dios River, here we embark to return to Puerto Maldonado and then to the airport to catch your flight.
